BMI formula is the same for everyone

The same formula always applies to the calculation of the BMI value. Regardless of whether the BMI is to be determined for adults, children, adolescents or teenagers. The additional information such as gender and age are used to interpret the body mass index (underweight, normal weight or overweight).

BMI values

If you have calculated your BMI on our website, take a look at the respective table for women or men. This contains the optimal BMI values for the respective age groups. In principle, the following rule applies: Use the calculator only from the age of 19, before that the human body is in a constant state of development. We have created another BMI calculator for calculating the BMI for children, which takes the changed body conditions into account.

If the BMI value falls below the ideal range, you are in the underweight range. If you exceed the optimal range, you are overweight. If your values exceed the ideal range by a large amount, the problem is pathological obesity and the way to the doctor is inevitable. Remember that being overweight has a negative impact on your life and health.

Note on the BMI calculator

  • The calculated BMI does not apply to pregnant and breastfeeding women and growing children.
  • Very small people (< als="" 150="" cm)="" und="" sehr="" große="" (=""> than 190 cm) often do not get the appropriate ratings in the BMI calculation.
  • The same applies to people (women / men) with a slim build and stocky people. Firstly, they often get undervalued when calculating the BMI, and secondly, they are classified too quickly as fat.

Hello,

am 19 years old, weigh 68 kg and am 172 cm tall. I have a BMI of 23. According to the optimal table, I'm at the top. I eat very little so that I don't exceed the value. What can I do (e.g. run)?

Hello Susanne,

I think your BMI value of 23 is great. Your specified body measurements also fit. So don't worry.

Hello,

can you explain to me why the normal weight BMI interval increases as you get older?

Why doesn't normal weight stay constant as you get older?

Then I have another question.

I used to often see the distinction between normal and ideal weight. Does that still exist today, or has people deviated from the concept of ideal weight because of health considerations?

greetings

Hello Stefen,

Re 1) The National Research Council (NRC) established a table of standards based on various studies. This takes the age into account in the BMI. In summary, it can be said that with increasing age, a slightly higher ideal BMI is more favorable.

Regarding 2) With normal weight, one moves in a certain range between underweight and overweight (e.g. 57 kg - 76 kg). And with the ideal weight, the perfect weight that fits your body is calculated (e.g. 66 kg).

Hello!
Why does the calculator only work from 45 kg? Unfortunately, I can't calculate my BMI this way, I'm only 1.59m tall and therefore weigh around 43kg.
Pity!

Hello,

the problem is not the calculation of the BMI. That's what the BMI formula is for. It is more difficult to evaluate the determined value (underweight, normal, overweight). Often other factors play a role in the precise assessment of the value. It is best to speak to a trusted doctor for an exact interpretation of the BMI value.

I have reduced the limit to 40 kg.
