How many top 2015 writers are teenagers

Study: Teenagers' Favorite Networks - Facebook, followed by Instagram and Snapchat

Trend reversal? Which trend?

Which social networks are particularly popular with teenagers? Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr and Vine? The Pew Research Center has released new survey results related to social media usage by teenagers. And it's not Snapchat and Vine that come first with teenagers. It's facebook.

The results are somewhat surprising, since the discussions about the use of Facebook by teenagers in the past originated from the Pew Research Center. Now, Facebook is not only the most used social network but also the most used social network.

Facebook still # 1 among teenagers - Instagram and Snapchat are catching up

That most teenagers use Facebook is no surprise. This is simply due to the number of users. Facebook has 1.4 billion users and, for example, Instagram 300 million users.

The results also confirm developments at Snapchat and Instagram. Both social networks are particularly popular with teenagers and are growing very rapidly in this target group. Snapchat is even stronger than Instagram, as Instagram is also spreading more and more to other target groups.

Twitter and Google+ are on the same page and were able to rank ahead of Vine and Tumblr in the study. Also a little surprise, as Vine and Tumblr are actually very popular with teenagers, much like Instagram and Snapchat. The size and the higher profile of Google+ and Twitter probably influenced the results here as well.

Facebook is also top in terms of frequency of use!

The results for the frequency of use are much more exciting. Here, too, Facebook is at the top with 41%. Followed by Instagram and Snapchat.

For 20% of teenagers surveyed, Instagram is the most important social network. With Snapchat, it's 11% and both mobile apps will continue to grow their shares.

The gap between Twitter and Google+ and Tumblr and Vine is much smaller here. For example, Vine is used by more teenagers, but in terms of usage intensity, Tumblr is ahead of Vine and just behind Google+. Snapchat and Instagram will continue to catch up with Facebook in the future. But they will not oust Facebook from the top position anytime soon. I suspect Tumblr will soon overtake Twitter and Google+. Twitter certainly has the better cards, as teenagers can move around “freely” and anonymously. For many teenagers, anonymity is a plus on Tumblr.

Instagram and Snapchat have a huge advantage over the other social networks. This advantage lies in the activity and the frequency with which your own content is published. Twitter and Tumblr also generate a lot of content, but they are often simply used for consuming content and not actively for publishing content.

The study by Pew Research confirms the positive development on Instagram and Snapchat. At the same time, however, it shows how present Facebook is still among teenagers.

We'd be interested in how you see the development. Are your target groups changing on Facebook? Are your fans getting older? Younger users are following you more and more on Instagram, or is the distribution similar to that on Facebook?
