What is your payment method

Your payment method is being declined in the App Store or iTunes Store

Before you can buy or update apps, you'll need to change or update their payment method.

If there is a pending payment in the App Store or iTunes Store, one of the following messages may appear:

  • "There was a billing issue with a previous purchase. Please edit your billing information to resolve the issue."
  • "There was a billing issue with a previous purchase. Click on 'Purchase Statistics' to view and fix the issue. If you cancel, you will not be able to make any purchases until this billing issue has been resolved."

To fix this problem, add a new payment method or update the billing information for your current payment method. The outstanding payment will now be billed. You can then buy items and update apps (including free apps).

Find out why a payment method cannot be charged

When you go to a list of your payment methods, you may see red text that tells you why the payment method couldn't be charged.

If there are problems with the primary payment method you have on file, another payment method will be charged. Learn more about how purchases are billed here.

If none of your payment methods can be charged, the last order will remain unpaid. You can view your purchase stats to see what you've bought recently and which order hasn't been paid for.

Update or change the payment method

You can update your billing information or add a payment method by going to Settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or iTunes on your Mac or PC. If you have a problem with your billing address or expiration date, tap or click the payment method, then update the billing information.

If you change the payment method, use a payment method that is legal and has sufficient funds in your country or region. You can set multiple payment methods for your Apple ID to prevent future purchases from being unpaid.

If you're using Family Sharing and you see a billing issue with a previous purchase, the family organizer will need to update their billing information.
